Organisations have developed an immunity to cultural change programs, people are tired of companies artificially manipulating the culture without addressing whats really going on inside the company. It is quite common for the cultural change program to be pushing one message while senior leaders are directly undermining the program with their behaviours, decisions and comments. HR departments are usually pushing out training programs and trying to indoctrinate while the latest business imperative derails and refocuses the business in a different direction. My favourite immunity tactic is when the program has been launched but the senior leader has left the business only to be replaced with another leader and another program. Employees have good reason to be sceptical.
Over the coming months this blog will look at the immunity issue and ways to overcome the cynicism at best and the downright sabotage at worst of cultural change programs. I am interested to hear the experience of others with these programs.
